Scotland is a Independent Internet Nation

I am confident that the .scot domain name will prove to be a real asset to the people of Scotland and to the worldwide family of Scots.”                                                                                                              – Nicola Sturgeon, deputy first minister

Scotland has declared independence from the UK, well, at least on the internet. A .scot domain has been created with fifty “pioneers” being the first to use and manage the  generic top-level domain (gTLD). Some of these “pioneers” include the Scottish Government, NHS Scotland, and both sides of the independence vote; Yes Scotland, and Better Together. The new domain will be able to purchase for the the public from September 24th, a week after the independent vote on September 18th. A move to .scot might not be all sentiment. According to the Register,  a survey of 2,000 Britons found that the greatest demand for a regional web address  was in Scotland. Surprisingly 71% said they would be more likely to buy from a firm that had a .SCOT address.

A software bug has been found in the Google Chromecast that allows someone to take control of the device and re-direct the device where ever they see fit. The issue came to light when a white-hat hacker Dan Petro  developed the Rickmote, a device built to exploit the bug in Chromecast. This device takes over the Chromecast and connects it to YouTube to play Rick Astley’s “Never Gonna Give You Up.” or rickrolling. Raspberry Pi have more information on how the bug was discovered here.

Life in the Unexpected Fast Lane

“To the best of my knowledge, this recall is the first occasion on which any car manufacturer has admitted publicly to a link between a software malfunction and sudden acceleration and issued a recall to fix the software”

Anthony Anderson comments on the software issues that caused Honda to recall 175,000 of their hybrid vehicles in Japan. The company stated that a software bug in the electrical control unit in the car could cause the car to suddenly accelerate. This is not the first time that issues have arose with car software and sudden acceleration. Toyota in the US is facing a number of civil cases in which claimants are stating their cars suddenly accelerated before crashing. Read more about it here
