Microsoft reveals the new name of its console, Game Developer Rare gets acquired and Opera web browser 8.0 is launched. All on today’s On This Day from TEST Huddle.
2000 – Microsoft unveils Xbox
Microsoft hosts a press conference in San Francisco, California to reveal that the official marketing name for their forthcoming Xbox game system will also be Xbox. Also released is a list of 156 Xbox developers including Activision, Eidos, Namco, and Sierra.
2002 – Microsoft buy something Rare
Microsoft acquires the British game developer Rare for US$375 million. Rare originally developed games for Nintendo including Golden eye for the Nintendo 64 but has move to Xbox titles since joining Microsoft.
2005 – Opera
Opera Software releases version 8.0 of its Opera web browser. This version no longer displays ad banners or requires a licensing fee, effectively leaving the browser available free of charge for the first time. The browser will be downloaded over a million times in the next two days, gaining it a notable increase in marketshare
