1995 – A listing Website is born
A former software architect by the name of Craig Newmark begins work on compiling an email distribution list of messages from local San Francisco Usenet users advertising and seeking apartments, events, and jobs publicly accessible. Craig would go on to launch this project as Craigslist.org. The classified site would grow to become one of the world’s largest classified sites.
2007 – Microsoft Invests
Microsoft secures a deal to acquire 1.6% of the Facebook social networking site for US$240 million. At this time, Facebook was valued at $15 billion. Today Facebook is estimated to be worth at least $200 billion. Microsoft sold some of its stock when Facebook floated in 2012.
