1986 – Tumblr

David Karp founder of Tumblr is born. The company was started when David and an engineer in his company Marco Arment began working on a site to host short-form blog posts (known as tumbleblogs). David currently remains CEO of the Tumblr.  The company was sold to Yahoo on May 20 last year for $1.1 billion.

 

 

 

 

1995 – Lotus changes hands

IBM buys Lotus (maker of  the Lotus 1-2-3 software) for $3.5 billion. Thecompany bought Lotus to meet the challange of Microsoft Excel. However by this time Windows 95 has been launched and the lotus software was already falling behind in popularity next to Microsoft Office packages.

 

 

 

 

2006 – The Windows Answer to the iPod

On this day in 2006, Microsoft announced that it would release a rival to the iPod. This would eventually come to the market as the Zune.  The first generation Zune was launched on November 14th 2006. It would be manufactured for another five years before being discontinued in 2011.
