On This Day – July 25th

A new company IBM gets its first patent, Clive Sinclair goes into business and Skype broadens its service. All on today’s On This Day from TestHuddle.

1911 – IBM is granted its first patent

In October 1910, IBM applied for U.S. patent #998,631. On July 25th 1911 this patent was granted. The patent was for a  ‘perforating machine’, i.e. a punch card system used for tabulation. IBM is one of the world leaders in terms of patent holders. The company has about 150,000 patents and growing. In 2010 IBM received 5,896 U.S. patents alone.  

 

1961 – Sinclair goes into business

Clive Sinclair, the man who created the Sinclair ZX81 and the Sinclair C5 establishes Sinclair Radionics to develop and sell electronic devices such as calculators.

2004 – Skype Landlines

On this day in 2004, Skype launches a update that allows calls to landlines from PC’s.
