1996 – Kasparov Vs IBM
In Philadelphia, in the United States, chess Grandmaster Garry Kasparov defeats the IBM computer Deep Blue. In the series of six games against Deep Blue, Kasparov wins two draws three and loses one. Deep Blue is a computer that is capable of “seeing” between fifty to one hundred billion chess positions in a mere three minute period. The match win by Kasperov is overshadowed by Deep Blue defeating Kasperov in one of the games. Deep Blue is an improved version of the older Deep Thought.
2000- Microsoft 2000 launched
In San Francisco, California, Microsoft unveils the new Windows 2000 operating system. The ceremony features performances from Santana and Patrick Stewart. Bill Gates, chairman of Microsoft, announces to media that the software cost more than a billion dollars to develop and involved over one thousand partners. The new system is based on the Windows NT series though the reliability comes at the loss of backward compatibility for some DOS-based games. The product retails at price US$189 for a Windows 95/98 upgrade.
