It depends on what exactly would you like to achieve. For example: Random mouse clicks can be automated. But a fresh application cannot be tested through automation unless it has been explored with human effort.
I would employ exploratory testing on two occasions
- To explore the application and to decide what are the tasks can be automated.
- Whenever I test I make sure to allocate some time to do exploratory testing.
