This Day in History in Computer and Technology – 30th March

Welcome to the latest edition of On This Day where we examine events that occurred on this day in history relating to computer and technology events. This day on March 30th the first commercial computer and Python updated.

 

1951 – First Commercial ComputerUNIVAC

In the United States,  John William Mauchly and J. Presper Eckert unveil the first commercial computer, the UNIVersal Automatic Computer (UNIVAC I). The computer was manufactured under the company name of Sperry Rand Corporation for the United States Census Bureau. The system is capable of performing 1,905 operations per second and storing data on magnetic tapes. The UNIVAC will remain in operation until 1963 and it will also be sold to companies such as General Electric and Sylvania.

 

2005 – Python Updated

On this day in 2005, version 2.4.1 of the Python programming language is released.
