The premier of Star Trek, the publication of Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban and the inventor of LED’s is acknowledged. All on today’s On This Day from TEST Huddle.
1966 – The premier of Star Trek
Not software testing related but a very notable day for science fiction fans. On this day in 1966, the science fiction television series Star Trek premiers on the NBC network with the episode“The Man Trap.” (No. 1). The first episode aired was actually the sixth episode produced. The series, which will produce eighty episodes, and contuines until September 2, 1969. It is a special achievement considering that the show will be universally snubbed by critics and the producers face calls from within the network to cancel the series throughout its airing. The series will spawn eleven feature films and five additional television series.
1999 – Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban is published
Another non technology related event but one that still has a huge cultural impact. On this day in 1999, the fantasy novel Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban by author J. K. Rowling is published by Bloomsbury Publishing in the UK. It is the third novel in the Harry Potter series. The novel will go to win both the 1999 Costa Book Awards and the Bram Stoker Award. It will also be shortlisted for several other awards. This makes the book one of the most-honoured works of fantasy in recent history.
2006 – The inventor of LED is awarded
Shuji Nakamura of the University of California, Santa Barbara is awarded the second Millennium Technology Prize, the world’s largest technology award, for his inventions of blue, green, and white light-emitting diodes (LEDs) and the blue laser diode. LED’s have been used for lights (indicators and signs), data communication (fibre optics) and more.
