On This Day – September 7th

One of the earliest online gaming networks is launched, iPod Nano is released and Amazon launch one of the first video streaming websites. All on today’s On This Day from TEST Huddle.

 

 2000 – SegaNet ReleasedSega Net

On this day in 200, Sega launches the SegaNet online gaming network. SegaNet was one of the first online gaming networks. The system allows Dreamcast players to play against other players via the dial-up network. If current Dreamcast owners  sign up, they receive a $150 rebate for signing an eighteen month contract. The online network is priced at $21.95 per month and is promoted by Fred Durst of band Limp Bizkit. It’s worth noting that even today, online gaming today is still struggling today to counter the lagging speed when playing online.

 

 

 

 

2005 – iPod Nano is announcedIpod Nano 1st Generation

At a press event about the Motorola Rokr, Apple Computer  make  a surprise announcement that it is discontinuing the iPod mini line of MP3 players (which were introduced in February 2004). They announce the iPod Nano line to replace it. The nano is a smaller unit (62% smaller, just 0.27 inches thick) and combines the flash memory of the iPod shuffle with the controls and interface of the iPod. It also has the capability ro display colour photographs as it features a 65,536 color display. Within its first first seventeen days of launch, the Nano will sell one million units.

 

 

 

2006 – Amazon launch UnboxAmazon Unbox

Amazon.com launches Amazon Unbox, an Internet video on demand service that offers television programs and films for rental and purchase from eight major television and film studios to U.S. customers. A rival to Netflix, the service offers rental of feature length films and television shows with prices ranging from $0.99 to $3.99 with additional discounts are given for full season TV purchases. The downloaded films includes two versions of videos requested, a full resolution video file and a lower resolution copy for portable devices. Unbox would later be rebranded to Amazon Video on Demand, its current streaming service.
