1999 – eBay stops a dangerous auction
On this day, in the U.S., the auction website eBay stops an auction for a human kidney as bids reached $5.7 million. The decision by eBay’s decision is based on their policy against allowing the auction of human body parts in accordance of United States federal law that considers such actions a felony punishable by up to five years in prison or a US$50,000 fine. An eBay spokesperson explains that the company believes the auctions was probably a bad prank.
2013 – Microsoft announce they are buying Nokia
Microsoft announced they were buying Nokia’s devices unit for $7.2 billion. The deal means Microsoft will pay €3.79 billion for Nokia’s business, plus another €1.65 billion to license its portfolio of patents. One interesting aspect about the price is that the €5.44-billion total is considerably less than Microsoft paid for Skype in 2011. Other costs move the total price to $7.2 billion. The deal was expected to close in the first quarter of 2014. As part of the deal 32,000 people are expected to transfer from Nokia to Microsoft, including 18,300 that are involved in manufacturing. This will also result in 12,500 of Nokia staff being laid off.
