Atari dump a huge amount of games in New Mexico and a new version of Ruby is released. All on today’s On This Day from TEST Huddle.
1983 – Atari literally dump a load of games
On this day in 1083, Atari dumps a significant portion of its unsold 1982 stock. It is a literal dump as the company dumps between ten and twenty truckloads of game cartridges and other computer equipment into a landfill in Alamogordo, New Mexico. Much of the dumped loads consist of cartridges of the game ET: The Extraterrestrial, which was a flop for Atari. The out of the way dump was reportedly selected because scavenging was forbidden. However this does not stop one entire truckload of games is stolen and allegedly driven down to Mexico to be duplicated and Alamogordo teenagers sneaking into the landfill to dig out free games. To stop the site from being looted further, many of the games will be crushed by bulldozers and a layer of concrete will be poured over what is left.
