1983 – A Hacker testifies before Congressneal Patrick

On this Day in the U.S. a hacker Neal Patrick, aged 17, testifies before the U.S. House of Representatives about the ease of computer break-ins and the manner in which they might be stopped.  Neal Patrick is a member of the hacking group 414s (named after the area code of their hometown of Milwaukee, Wisconsin).  The “hacker,” testifies that he had broken into numerous computer systems nationwide, including those at the Los Alamos National Laboratory, Security Pacific Bank, and the Sloan-Kettering Cancer Centre, and explains to Congress how easy and dangerous hacking is and how simple it would be to stop. After the investigation by congress six bills concerning computer crime will be introduced in the House later that year.  One of the most significant events of the bills leads to white hat, grey hat and black hat hackers starting to distinguish themselves from each other.
