The company Micro-soft is founded, Google.com is registered and Best Buy purchases Napster. All on today’s On This Day from TEST Huddle.
1975 – Micro-soft is Founded
High School students Bill Gates and Paul Allen, who write programs for the MITS Altair 8800 establish the company Micro-soft. In November 1976, the company name will be officially registered as Microsoft.
1997 – Google.com is registered
Google registers the domain Google.com. The search engine was on Google.stanford.edu before this time, and the link to the Stanford site is still in operation. THe reason Google.com was selected was that the name was a play on the word “googol,”. The term is a mathematical term for the number represented by the numeral 1 followed by 100 zeros. The name was selected by founders Larry and Sergey as they state, their mission is to organise a infinite amount of information on the web.
2008 – Best Buy purchases Napster
On this day in 2008, Best Buy, a U.S. electronics retailer buys Napster for $121 million. Napster was once synonymous with illegal music downloads. The company re-invented itself as a legal music streaming service. The company bought Napster in the hope of using Napster’s technological capabilities and its subscriber base to reach consumers looking to explore digital music and other forms of entertainment through electronic devices that it retails. Napster would be sold on to Rhapsody in 2011, where after the name would be retired.
