Windows Millennium is launched, so is The Nintendo GameCube and Bing gets bigger than Yahoo. All on today’s On This Day from TEST Huddle.
2000 – Windows Millennium
Microsoft releases the Windows Millennium Edition (ME) operating system for a limited-time promotional price of only US$59.95 for home users replacing Windows 98 and Window 98 Second Edition. ME is designed for the home user. Unlike Microsoft’s Windows 2000 which offers advanced security, reliability, and networking features, Windows Me is basically just an upgrade to the DOS-based code on which previous Windows versions have been built. Within four days of its release, it will sell 250,000 copies.
2001 – Nintendo GameCube is launched
In Japan, Nintendo launches the GameCube video game console. The new console features a 405MHz “Gekko” processor based on the 256-bit IBM Power PC. It also has 43MB RAM. 162MHz graphic processing unit, four controller ports, and two memory card slots in Japan.
2010 – Bing outpaces Yahoo
According to Nielsen Media Research, Microsoft’s Bing search engine surpasses Yahoo! search engine for the first time in terms of the number of search queries each receives. Nielson reports that Bing has a 13.9% market share, while Yahoo has a 13.1% market share Google remains the leader with a 65% market share. This statistic becomes irrelevant when you realise that Microsoft and Yahoo! announced a deal in which Bing would power Yahoo! Search in 2009 although that would not be completed until early 2012.
