On This Day – September 12th

The co-founder of Adobe systems is born, remote computing takes its first steps and a standard for wireless networks is established. All on today’s On This Day from TEST Huddle.

 

 

1991 – Data DiscmanSony Data_Discman

Sony introduces the Data Discman, a handheld computer that can operate on small compact discs costing anywhere from $20 to $50 each. The devices’ release is set for November and it is expected to retail at about $550.

 

 

 

 

2005 – eBay buy Skypeebay-skype

eBay announces that it will acquire all of the outstanding shares of privately-held voice over IP (VOIP) provider Skype for approximately $2.6 billion. The sale includes $1.3 billion in cash and 32.8 million shares of eBay stock as well as another US$1.5 billion contingent on the company’s future performance. Ebay purchased the company hoping to integrate the company’s telephony with its auction services and its PayPal banking service. Ebay did not hold onto Skype for long, the company sold the service on again to Microsoft for $8.56 billion in 2011.

 

 

2005 – World’s First 16 Gb NAND flash chipsamsung 16gb Nand flash

On this day in 2006, Samsung Electronics unveil the world’s first 16Gigabit (Gb) NAND flash memory chip, a device that the company claims marks the beginning of a new era in data storage technology. The 16Gb device features 16.4 billion functional transistors, each approximately one two-thousandths the thickness of a human hair. Such NAND chips, most widely used memory in mobile applications, will allow portable device developers to create 32 Gigabyte memory cards by combining up to sixteen such chips on each card. A 32GB density will offer the ability to store the equivalent of  680 hours worth of music, or twenty movies with DVD-quality resolution (32 hours) on a single mobile device.
