1988 – Sega Release the MegaDrive
On this day in 1988, Sega releases the Mega Drive console in Japan. The console features a 32-bit Motorola 68000 CPU with a 16-bit bus, 64KB RAM, 2KB ROM, and a Zilog Z80 sound processor. The console precedes the Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES) by two years and as such has a head-start in the market. The console will lead to the start of console hardware and marketing conventions. The Mega Drive will sell over twenty-nine million units across a fourteen-year lifespan.
