1981 – The Link
Panasonic introduces The Link,. The new device is a handheld computer about the size of a small book, with a keyboard but no screen. It features a video output that allows the device to be hooked up to a television or to a host computer via a telephone dial-up connection. The new computer retails at $600.
2001 – Apple IPod
In the U.S. Apple Computer releases the first iPod. The new device features a 5GB “1,000 song” capacity. While the device is far from the first MP3 player on the market, it is notable for its large capacity, quick loading times, and sleek design. The device retails at $399 and begins the dominance of Apple in the portable music player market.
