1997 – Microsoft Release Internet Explorer Version 4.0
In the United States, Microsoft releases version 4.0 of its Internet Explorer web browser for Windows. The launch of the browser marks the beginning of the first so-called “browser war”. By integrating the web browser into Windows Microsoft also inadvertently initiate one of the causes of the antitrust case United States v. Microsoft. The browser introduced a number of technological advances, including support for Dynamic HTML, inline PNG images, parental ratings, and website “subscriptions” which notify users of updates. By March 1999, this version of the browser will achieve a 60% marketshare.
2006 – Silicon Graphics is winded-up
One of the earliest pioneers of 3-D graphics for PC’s; Silicon Graphics, Inc. (SGI), announces that teh company is filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection. The company also plans to sell its assets to Rackable Systems. The sale will not be finalised for another three years until May 2009 for $42.5 million.
