IBM launches its first PC, Dell enters the network industry market, and IBM acquires SPSS. All on today’s On This Day from TestHuddle.

1981 – IBM announces the System/23 Datamaster

Although not as poopular as the IBM PC which would be launched a month later, in July 1981, IBM role out the IBM System/23 Datamaster. It is IBM’s first desktop computer. The computer features a 16-bit 8086 processor, a viewing screen, up to 4.4MB of diskette storage. The PC runs on Intel’s 8086 16-bit processor and is primarly focused on data processing applications. The computer is launched with accounting and word processing programmes. The system retails for the price of  $9,830.

 

 

 

1997 – Dell enters the network industry marketrsz_dell_workstation_400

On this day in 1997, Dell launches its first workstation, the Dell Workstation 400. The launch marks a move by Dell into the network industry market where more powerful desktop computers are used primarily for engineering. The company plans to expand from personal desktop computers and laptops into this market to secure a larger market share. The Dell Workstation ranges in prices from US$3,000 to US$8,000.

 

 

 

 

 2009 – IBM acquires more stats

On July 28th, 2009, IBM announces that the company has acquired SPSS for $1.2 billion. SPSS is a software package used for statistical analysis and is utilised by governments, university’s,  and businesses.
