2001 – FBI arrest suspect for allegedly stealing eBooks from Adobe
A Russian Ph.D student; Dmitry Sklyarov, and employee of the Russian software company ElcomSoft, is arrested by the FBI at the DEF CON convention in Las Vegas. He is arrested for creating “The Advanced eBook Processor” (AEBR) programme ehich allows users to copy Adobe electronic books. He is charged with distributing a product designed to circumvent copyright protection measures, under the terms of the Digital Millennium Copyright Act. Soon after his arrest there are mailing lists organised to protest his arrest. These campaigns argue that no DMCA violations that the DMCA does not apply in Russia. His case was dropped after he agreed to testify againist his company. The company trial occurs in the same year with the jury finding ElcomSoft not guilty of charges.
