1975 – Gates gets his First Contract
Bill Gates and Paul Allen sign a licensing agreement with Micro Instrumentation and Telemetry Systems (MITS). This contract allowed MITS to implement the BASIC programming language that Gates and Allen had developed for the new MITS Altair BASIC. For their deal, Gates and Allen receive US$3,000 immediately, with royalties of US$30 per copy of 4K BASIC, and US$35 for 8K BASIC. This occurred while Gates was still a student at Harvard.
1999 – Messenger makes its début
Once the most popular chat service on the web, on this day in 1999, Microsoft launched the first version of MSN Messenger, a freeware instant messaging client. The product was renamed Windows Live Messenger in 2005. After Microsoft acquired Skype in 2011, the company discontinued the Messenger service and merged it with the Skype. Up until this time, Messenger remained a popular chat tool. Microsoft reported that in 2009, the service had over 330 million active users.
