2001 – Worm Attack

The Code Red Worm first emerges on the internet. The worm gots its name because the men who discovered it at the time were drinking a soft drink,  Code Red Mountain Dew. The worm attacked computers running Microsoft’s IIS web server. The IP server of the White House was among those affected. The worm exploited a vulnerability in the indexing software distributed with IIS using a common type of vulnerability known as buffer overflow.

 

 

 

 

 

2004 – Google expands its lotpicasa

Google buys Picasa Inc and soon afterwards begins to offer the image management tool as freeware. The name from Picasa comes from three words. The surname of the Spanish painter Pablo Picasso, the Spanish phrase “mi casa”, meaning “my house” and the popular use of “pic” for picture or private art.

 

 

2009 – The perils of texting

On this day in 2009, a 15-year-old Staten Island girl drops into open manhole while texting. After the incident the parents state they will be suing the state.
