1983 – TCP/IP is established
The computers that form the ARPANET are required to have switched from the Network Control Protocol (NCP) to Transmission Control Protocol / Internet Protocols (TCP/IP) by this date. This signifies the creation of the Internet. The switch is the result of a military directive issued by Richard DeLauer, the United State Under Secretary of Defense. Some button badges are distributed to those taking part in the move.
2000 – Y2k Passes
The much publicised and hyped Y2K computer bug passes with only the most minor of complications following years of preparation with billions of dollars spent. The largest technology firms, however, still had a large number of staff on stand-by incase of any customer issues including Hewlett-Packard, Intel, and Microsoft, among others. One issue that arose was the United States Naval Observatory (USNO) (the official US timekeeper) returning “19100? as the current year.
