IBM release COBOL and Microsoft settle with Caldera. All on today’s On This Day from TEST Huddle.
1962 – IBM release COBOL
IBM’s Data Processing Division (DPD) release an operational version of COBOL (Common Business Oriented Language). COBOL has become IBM’s primary programming language for development. COBOL became prmarly used in business, finance, and administrative systems for companies and governments.
2000 – Microsoft settle with Caldera
At Salt Lake City, Microsoft settles a four-year legal anti-trust lawsuit brought against it by Caldera. Caldera has alleged that Microsoft has made numerous attempts to deter the public from purchasing the software. The lawsuit came about after Caldera bought DR-DOS, an MS-DOS alternative, from Novell for $400,000 in 1996. Caldera had successfully argued that Microsoft made a number of attempts to reduce Caldera’ market including resuming developement of MS-DOS when the company had decided to end it and marketing specially to Caldera users to encourage them to switch over.
