IBM deliver a prototype PC to Microsoft and Red Hat Linux Version 5.0 is released. All on today’s On This Day from TEST Huddle.
1980 – IBM delivers a prototype to Microsoft
The company International Business Machines (IBM) delivers its first prototype IBM 5150 PC to Microsoft. The reason for the prototype delivery is for Microsoft to develop an operating system for the system. Paul Allen of Microsoft had previously acquired the rights to the QDOS operating system (Quick and Dirty Operating System) from Seattle Computer Products for US$50,000. Microsoft will rename the operating system MS-DOS and licensed it to IBM. The IBM 5150 packaged with MS-DOS will go on to standardized the computer marketplace.
1997 – Red Hat Linux Version 5.0 releases
Version 5.0, “Hurricane” of the Red Hat Linux operating system is released. This version was the first version to include BRU2000-PE™ backup and Real Audio™ client and server software. It was released in time for the Christmas sales. Hurricane was named in recognition of the hurricane that had swept over the location of the Red Hat offices a few months before and done a great deal of damage to the surrounding area.
