Netscape Navigator is released and Alta Vista is launched. All on today’s On This Day from TEST Huddle.

 

1994 – Netscape release Netscape Navigatornetscape1

The first commercial web browser is launched. On this day in 1994 Netscape releases version 1.0 of Netscape Navigator, the first commercial web browser. The Netscape Navigator will quickly become one of the most popular internet browsers and will pass Mosaic as the most popular web browser.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

1995 – Alta-Vista Launchedaltavista-oct-1996

A year to the day after the first commercial web browser is launched, Digital Equipment Corporation publicly launches the AltaVista search engine. The search engine was developed by researchers at Digital Equipment Research Laboratories. The engine has a index of sixteen million documents from the domain altavista.digital.com.  AltaVista will go on to become the most popular internet serach engine during the rise of the internet. By January 5th, the search engine will handle over two million requests a day and by November 1996, the site will handle twenty-two million requests a day.
