1948 – Birth of Carol Bartz
Born on this day in Winona, Minnesota in 1948 was Carol Bartz. She was the former president of the architectural and engineering design software company Autodesk before moving on to become president and CEO of the Internet services company Yahoo! She was CEO there for just over two years being president there from January 2009 to September 2011. Although she made some initial impact in the company, she was fired by the board in 2011. 1969 – The first Internet hardware
The first network switch and first piece of Internet equipment called IMP (Interface Message Processor) is sent to UCLA. The IMP was the packet-switching node used to interconnect participant networks to the ARPANET which ran from the late 1960s to 1989. It was the first generation of gateways, which are today succeeded by routers. The room where the technology was built has now been opened up to the public. Read about it here.
1990 – Computer Misuse Act
The British Computer Misuse Act goes into effect. The Act was designed to address computer fraud. The debate before the ACT came into effect had contuined for many years previously. The Act came about as a result of a number of failed prosecutions of hackers, including one well-publicized case in which two men hacked into a British Telecom computer to leave messages in the Duke of Edinburgh’s private mailbox.
