1890 – U.S. Census completed in record time
The US Census Bureau announces the U.S. population of 62,622,250, determined for the first time by using an automated method, the Hollerith Census Machine. Hollerith would later go on to form IBM with two other companies.
1995 – Internet Explorer 1 is introduced
The Microsoft Internet Explorer 1 was introduced by Microsoft on this day in 1995. It was a reworked version of Spyglass Mosaic which Microsoft had licensed, like many other companies initiating browser development, from Spyglass Inc. It came with Microsoft Plus! for Windows 95 and was also packaged with the OEM release of Windows 95.
2005 – A malware virus emerges
The Zobot or Zotob malware virus makes an impact in the U.S. The image here is taken from the Financial Times website in August 2005. The virus mainly attacked servers operating Microsoft Windows 2000. The malware virus was not the most prominent of malware viruses but it did garner a lot of attention because it disproportionally affected a large number of media organisations including the Financial Times, ABC, CNN and others. The reason these organisation were affected was that they had delayed in patching vulnerabilities in their network which the virus took advantage of. It is estimated that the cost of the virus amounted to $500 million.
