2000 – Playstation 2 Launched
Continuing with our round-up of console releases on On This Day, on this day in 2000, the Playstation 2 was released in Europe. The system features a 294.912 MHz processor, a single analog DualShock2 controller, two memory card slots, two USB ports with a 128-bit Emotion Engine graphics processor. The system is backwards compatible with PlayStation games and supports CD-ROM, Dolby Digital, and plays DVD media. The console retails for the price of ₤300.
2010 – Wikileaks Release Some Documents
On This day in 2010, one of the biggest leaks of classified information occurred. The website Wikileaks released over a quarter of a million U.S. diplomatic cables, 15,652 of which are classified “secret,” including messages discussing calls for an attack on Iran, corruption, criticism of world leaders, the Guantánamo Bay prison camp and other delicate political matters. Several newspapers, including The New York Times, The Guardian and Die Welt publish highlights of the releases.
