Welcome to the latest edition of On This Day where we examine events that occurred on this day in history relating to computer and technology events. This Day in Computer and Tech History on 14th April, the BBC announce the Vision Electronic Recording Apparatus and the Nvidia .

 

1958 – BBC Announce Vision Electronic Recording ApparatusBBC Vera

In the U.K., the BBC publicly demonstrates the Vision Electronic Recording Apparatus (VERA). Developed by Dr. Peter Axon it is the second practical video recorder ever created. Using three-track heads to read half-inch magnetic tape spooled on a reel less than twenty-one inches in diameter at a speed of 200 inches per second, the recorder allows for fifteen minutes of recording.

 

 

 

2004 – Nvidia geForce 6800NVidia GeForce 6800

nVidia announce the release of the GeForce 6800 graphics processing unit (GPU). The company claim the GPU is the biggest single leap forward in graphics technology the company has ever made. Within a few weeks nVidia’s main rival ATI announces the release of the X800, a GPU with nearly a identical performance.
