On This Day – July 1st

1977 – FORTRAN 80 is released

The programming language FORTRAN-80 designed by Microsoft  is released. Mainly used for scientific calculations, this version features better I/O interface and the ability to read and write without a FORMAT statement!

 

 

 

 

1998 – Beginnings of Biochips

Biochip

The United States government’s Argonne National Laboratory jointly announce plans with Motorola and Packard Instrument Company to produce biochips. These chips, aimed primarily for the medical and agriculture industries, will make use of a micro-gel technology in which chemical compounds can be tested. Interestingly this news comes seven years to the day since Terminator 2 was released in cinemas.

2002 – One Billion Computers

The BBC reports that around this date, one billion computers have been purchased in the world. The survey conducted by tech consultancy group Gartner Dataquest found that strong growth had occurred across China, Latin America, eastern Europe and India. Read More here
