The MediaTek software has a “backdoor” that allows root access thus you could potentially give apps permission to access and change the read only properties on the device.

Could Linux Zero Day Bug Affect You?

Adrian Ludwig, the head of security for Android comments on a bug recently found by an Israeli security company Perception Point. Perception Point report that the bug could allow access programmes or apps to access privileged permissions on the device or computer. Android have said the effects of the bug are overstated.
