The Mozilla Organization was created by Netscape in 1998 to organise the development of the Mozilla Application Suite. When AOL ( owner of Netscape) decided to scale back its involvement with Mozilla Organization, the Mozilla Foundation was formed on July 15, 2003. The aim of the foundation which wholly owns the Mozilla Corporation (provider of the Mozilla Firefox web browser and the Mozilla Thunderbird email client) is to promote openness on the web through its manifesto.

The Foundation is entirely non-for-profit and in 2012 had a revenue of US$312 million.
