On This Day in Technology and Computer History: June 16th

A guide to the historic technology and computer events that occurred on this day in history. The first mobile virus and Software Development Laboratories is incorporated.

 

1977 – Software Development Laboratories is Incorporated

Larry Ellison, Bob Miner, and Ed Oates incorporate Software Development Laboratories (SDL) Redwood Shores, California. The company would be later re-named Oracle Corporation and become one of the largest software companies in the U.S.

 

 

 

 

2004 – The First Exclusive Mobile Phone Virus

It is announced by the Russian computer security firm Kaspersky Lab that the first known mobile phone virus in history has been discovered. “Cabir.” spreads wirelessly via bluetooth between phones running the Symbian operating system and is thought to have been created by a group in Spain calling itself “29A”. Initial worries that the virus could be could be used to eavesdrop, place text messages and steal data prove to be unfounded. The virus main offence is the running down of battery of infected phones.
