1992 – The First AOL Instant Message

On this day in 1992, Ted Leonsis owner of Redgate Communications, sends the first documented AOL Instant Messenger (AIM) message to his wife. The message reads: “Don’t be scared … it is me. Love you and miss you” She responds “Wow … this is so cool!” His company will be acquired by America Online (AOL) two years later, and Leonsis will spend the next thirteen years with AOL as an executive vice chairman.
