On This Day in Technology History: December 16th

1975 – IMSAI 8080 ComputerIMSAI 8080

In the United States, IMS Associates start to ship the IMSAI 8080 computer kits. These kits are one of the first consumer computers sold directly to customers. The company will gone on to sell approximately twenty thousand units. The fully assembled units sell at a price of $931 while the kit’s retail at $599. The system features  include a 2.0MHz Intel 8080A chipset with a maximum of 64K of RAM, and the option of a additional cassette or floppy drive.

 

1999 – Dot Com Bubble

Also in the United States, on this day in 1999 the stock of operating system developer Be, Inc reaches an all-time high of $39 a share (a US$1.4 billion market cap). Soon after the stock value will plummet following the bursting of the dot-com bubble.
