Business Transformation with Open Source Test Automation

Joerg Bruewer

Global Head of QA - Schenker, Germany

I will be sharing organizational and technology insights, and lessons learned, from a large scaled automation focused QA Transformation.

For Test Automation we were able to harmonize the automation tools and build a community of practice around the automation topic. To make this happen, we foster an open source strategy and make intensive use of the RobotFramework, based on Python. To do so, we build up trainings and offer coaching on the tool usage to our QA Engineers. As a result, more than 50 QA Engineers are now using and improving our Framework day by day. We have developed our own libraries for the Robotframework, and paid back to the RoboFramework community.

The empowerment of QA Engineers to use automation as tool, significantly increased the efficiency of their work. Now test automation is not only used to automate regression tests, we also used the automation tool to setup their test environment and prepared test data for instance. As an additional benefit of driving our own tool development based on Open Source, we can now test end-2-end processes.

Major projects have developed end-2-end automated tests across technology and environment. If you look how a shipment order is created and getting processed, EDI Integration, Web-Applications, Rich-Client Application and Mobile Applications need to be integrated. We now cover this by ourselves and took an important step into RPA. This was a game changer and significantly reduced release time.

RESULTS:

  1. We significantly increased test coverage
  2. We increased efficiency
  3. We empowered QA Engineers
