2003 – The World’s Largest (Battery) BackupFairbanks backup batterys

The city of Fairbanks, Alaska connected to what was at the time the world’s largest battery backup. The batteries produce up to 27 MW of power for 15 minutes, giving the utility company that runs it enough time to get back-up generation on line. The system is capable of producing up to 46 MW for a short time,  but as the primary need is for the system to cover the 15-minute period between sudden loss of generation and start-up of back-up generation that is all it is required to do. The system is needed as temperatures regularly drip to -50°C in the area.
